Implied Risk Aversion in Lottery Bond Prices♦

چکیده

Both the equity premium puzzle and the credit spread puzzle address the problem of a reasonable size of agents’ risk aversion. The empirical estimation of risk aversion parameters is impeded by the fact that observed prices depend on risk preferences and probability beliefs. The market for German redemption lottery bonds constitutes a clean environment to estimate risk aversion coefficients from transaction prices as the probabilities of price changes caused by redemption lotteries are objectively known. We contribute to the literature by estimating implied relative risk aversion coefficients from bond market data within a fully specified dynamic equilibrium model. Our most important findings are threefold: estimated relative risk aversion coefficients are significantly positive, of moderate magnitude, and not significantly different across issuer groups. Preferences Toward Risk and Asset Prices: Evidence from Russian Lottery Bonds

This paper studies the relationship between investor risk preferences and asset returns. The paper provides direct evidence on the risk aversion of participants in a securities market. It uses the prices of lottery bonds issued by the Imperial Russian Government in 1864 and 1866 to estimate investor risk aversion and to study changes in preferences toward risk. Time variation in investor risk p...

List construction and lottery presentation modulate multiple price list responses

Multiple price list (MPL) elicitation of risk preferences is familiar through the Holt & Laury (2002) procedure. We assess the impact of varying list order and spacing, and the presentation via text and/or graphics. Some nonlinear transformations of lottery prices systematically increase elicited risk aversion, and graphical displays tend to reduce it, relative to the original MPL.

The Time Variation in Risk Appetite and Uncertainty

We develop new measures of time-varying risk aversion and economic uncertainty that can be calculated from observable financial information at high frequencies. Our approach has four important elements. First, we formulate a dynamic no-arbitrage asset pricing model that consistently prices all assets under assumptions regarding the joint dynamics among asset-specific cash flow dynamics, macroec...

Payoff and Presentation Modulation of Elicited Risk Preferences in MPLs

Since Holt & Laury (2002), the multiple price list (MPL) procedure has been widely used to elicit individual risk preferences. We assess the impact of varying list order and spacing, and of presentation via text or graphs. Relative to the original MPL baseline, some nonlinear transformations of lottery prices systematically increase elicited risk aversion, while some graphical displays tend to ...

Why are British Premium Bonds so successful? The effect of saving with a thrill

The British Premium Bond, which offers a monthly uncertain return solely based on a lottery, is an immense success. Why? We find that the bond bears relatively low risk in terms of CARA and CRRA utility. Since prizes are tax-free, the higher an individual’s tax bracket, the more it pays to invest in the lottery bond. However, we demonstrate that the CARA and CRRA coefficients (before and after ...
